The Psychology of Money

I've taken the mindset that each song has something to teach me. I wrote this initial verse many, many years ago. The first verse popped out of me so fully formed that it seemed impossible to elaborate on. Every time I returned to it I couldn't envision how to build out beyond what had flowed so easily. My version of writer's block. Then I read the book The Psychology of Money and after a few other dozens of life lessons I realized that if I set myself to focus on what was true about money, currency and how commerce is impacted by psychology and emotions I had a much clearer shot at creating what I wanted to express. As I was finishing up the first full draft I met an amazing local violinist Ari Langer who dropped by my home studio to share his expressive talents!

The Psychology of Money

Fear moves markets
Our hearts are filled with fear
Our hearts carry as much feeling
as the markets can bear
We don't invest we speculate
what’s worth more at a future date
more than when we bought
at least that’s what we thought
but this is simply gambling

Insurance counts on
Anticipating tears
Securing safety
To guard against the fears
Our deepest yearning to be seen
requires a protective scheme
its a deceit wearing armor on our sleeve
it’s the illusion of controlling

In the exchange of love
You know we are enough
The value is in the giving
What is in our hearts
more than the sum of parts
but Is that how we are living?

Fear’s the Reason
to commoditize control
Goods and services
we use to numb our souls
we don’t learn our lessons well
we get caught up in the spell
we don’t always have within ourselves
the luxury of understanding

Money opens
how we Choose to spend our time
I felt time stand still
with your body next to mine
we recognize it when we see
that our minds can make us free
As we evolve and value love
Our minds are still expanding
