lyrics

Memento mori (a)

A new day only just begun,
with moon low in hazy blue,
full and transparent.
"Memento mori" I heard in the silence.

She had been a witness to
our marriage in the West.
We stood high while she rose;
Her father sinking slow behind the peaks.

How small you and I in this world.
I dreamed you were those Western Isles!
Seen all this before, but not like this:
With you in my breath.

How could I forget? But I do.
Again and again and yet again.
Yes, morning light brings joy and hope.
But morning moon reminds me of our timeless love.Memento mori

Memento mori (b)
A new day's promise just fulfilled,
with shy moon low in hazy blue,
full but transparent.
"Memento mori" she whispered across all my lives.

Eternal grave witness
to a secret Western wedding.
We, suspended in sacred silence while she rose,
her radiant father withdrawing behind all-knowing peaks.

How expectant you and I with this world!
And then I dreamed you were those Western Isles.
Once only, ever, like this,
With you in my breath.

How could I forget? But I do.
Again and again and yet again.
Yes, morning sun brings joy and hope,
but morning moon reminds me of our timeless love.
