It's There but It's Not Heavy

about

This track has a bit of history. I wrote this as a teenager and performed it with my first band of high school and church friends called Eclipse. As I started into my first year of college as a music major (I did not graduate as a music major) I learned that music juries were recorded and not fully understanding the process I abused the system by bringing my band to be recorded instead! The resulting recording was raw and not really intended for a folk rock band. Those recordings got lost to time... until in the year of 2022 a man contacted me and explained he was the younger brother of a friend who had always been a fan of my music and the band Eclipse! He had grown up and become a father and learned to play guitar, and he had overdubbed his own heavy metal guitars as he envisioned the song should have. I was so delighted that he contacted me and with his version of the song! He informed me he had the digitized version of all those songs and sent them back to me! Based on this interaction I decided to rerecord those songs in a more polished studio version and in the process to rearrange and rewrite them from my current sensibilities. This allows me to be in a wondrous dialogue with my younger self of approximately 20 years old. Extra Special thanks to Tim Villanueva for awakening this dragon!

lyrics

ITS THERE BUT ITS NOT HEAVY

How can you say it’s the only way
When you know it don’t come from your heart?
How can you live this way day by day
When you know that you can’t play the part?

But to those of you who’ve been there
and the those of you who know
in the shadows in the corner
well I think it’s time we go

Here we go again, but what do you defend?
When you’re busy making sure you’re right
How can you pretend that you’ll win in the end
When you don’t know the cause for the fight

To you and your omniscience
knowing I’ll withstand the pain
Giving time while I recover
And then you stick in again

Out of everything you’ve tried tell me what’s on your side
to make you think you’ve got a pretty good deal
You better watch your foolish pride you’re being taken for a ride
and it’s all because you’re too afraid too feel

I never said I was a prophet
felling walls and burning masks
I haven’t claimed to be a martyr
clinging to his painful tasks

Many farewells seems so fitting
although this one’s out of place

if nothing else I’ve got your name down
and a picture of your face
